Lucky Bamboo Plants - Meaning, Care, and Arrangements

A healthy lucky bamboo plant should be bright green in color with healthy leaves. There shouldn’t be much yellow or brown coloring if the plant is healthy. Some roots should be showing, and the water level should be above the roots.

Most lucky bamboo plants are grown in water only and no soil. If there’s soil in the pot, make sure it’s moist, not too dry or too wet. Small stones, marbles, etc. in the vase are fine because those help with stability. There are usually multiple stalks tied together with a ribbon for good fortune. Make sure the ribbon isn’t tied too tightly as this can damage the stalks.

The stalks naturally grow straight vertically; however, decorative styles exist as well. Manipulating the stalks’ positioning relative to their light source causes them to grow in curly and twisted designs. When purchased in store, these designs usually cost more to compensate the amount of labor required to produce these special designs. Although difficult to achieve, it is possible to create these designs yourself over time.

In the Chinese culture, the number of stalks in the lucky bamboo plant has certain meanings:
•    2 stalks = Love
•    3 or 6 stalks = Happiness
•    5 or 7 stalks = Health
•    8, 18, 28, or 38 stalks = Prosperity

In any case, never give as a gift an arrangement with only 4 stalks because this symbolizes death.

The design of the plant also has certain meanings:
•    Tower (2 or more tiers) = Positive future, Anchored Feng Shui
•    Trellis = Advancement, Prevention of negative energy flow
•    Double-Braided = Bringing of good news
•    Triple-Braided = Progression in business and life
